The Landmark Summer Art School offers you the opportunity to discover your creative potential. Enjoy a moment of uninterrupted time to develop your art skills with individual tuition and guidance.

Our summer short courses are designed for small groups of adults beginners and returners who will benefit from furthering their own art projects.

Early booking is strongly recommended for all art classes.

Art School Botanical Art – Drawing & Watercolour

Tuesday 24 – Thursday 26 July 2018

10am – 4pm

Tutored by Marcia Hughes, a renowned local artist and an experienced teacher, the course teaches techniques in watercolour painting and drawing Botanical Art and Illustration. Flowers, foliage and plants are observed and step-by-step demonstrations are included with an emphasis on accurate and realistic depiction. The workshop is designed for beginners and intermediate participants. A varied selection of fresh and dried plant material will be available on the day.

Art School Portrait Drawing

Tuesday 24 – Thursday 26 July 2018

10am – 4pm

A course which focuses on drawing the head and develops your knowledge of anatomical structure, facial proportions and features. You will also learn how to compose a portrait to express mood and reveal character. A range of linear and tonal methods will be explored and different techniques practised. You will draw from a variety of clothed models and be taught how to depict the head from different viewpoints. Two half day sessions will be spent developing an understanding of structure, features and proportions. For these sessions you will mainly draw from skulls and simplified sculptures of the head. For the rest of the course you will be drawing from live models.

There will usually be two models sitting at a time to give participants variety and enable them to get closer to the model.

Suitable for all levels, although some previous drawing experience will be an asset. All participants will work from an easel either sitting or standing.

Art School Life Drawing

Tuesday 31 July – Thursday 2 August 2018

10am – 4pm

This course is open to all abilities. Previous life drawing experience is not essential although beginners should ideally have done a little general drawing previously. Returners and those with experience will be encouraged and supported in deepening their own practice and in experimenting with new approaches.

The course combines traditional observational methods with exciting and innovative exercises designed to help you see and interpret the figure in new ways. A different life model will pose each day and there will be a good balance of long and short poses. You will be working from an easel either standing or sitting.

Art School Creative Paper Cutting

The ancient art of paper cutting has been brought bang up to date on this one day workshop. You’ll be inspired by looking at a wide range of cut out artefacts including Polish paper cuts, Haitian metal work and wooden fret work as well as numerous art works, photos and resource sheets. You’ll master cutting safely using a scalpel and get to grips with creative freehand lettering to design your own unique paper cut. Highly rewarding and great fun, you will never need to buy a greetings card again!

Art School Watercolour in the Style of JMW Turner

Tuesday 14 – Thursday 16 August 2018

10am – 4pm

The course will look at JMW Turner’s watercolour techniques. His methods and materials will be discussed and demonstrated and you will be given time to practice using wet in wet, scratching out and stopping out, together with trying out his use of gum Arabic and Ox gall to enhance your paintings. Reference images will be available and weather permitting some outdoor sketching will also be scheduled. The theme of the workshop will be on exploring Turner’s innovative methods and to link this with your own personal style. Art historical references of Turner’s exciting work will be shown in the form of a slide projection.

There will be a guided tour of Turner’s House in St Margaret’s on Wednesday 15 August, beginning at 10.30am.

Expert tuition is provided by our tutor Bob Meecham through demonstration and practice. It is hoped you will be encouraged to go to Tate Britain to see the work and have a deeper understanding of this unique and innovative painter.

Art School Favourite Places: Colour Linocut

Tuesday 21 note! – Thursday 23 August 2018

10am – 4pm

Jennie Ing is a local artist and an experienced tutor. She intends the course to be fun, concentrating on relief printmaking without a press, and explores the whole creative process from generating ideas and experimenting with techniques and approaches through to producing a selection of finished linocut prints.

Linocut is a fascinating and versatile technique involving the cutting away from the surface of a piece of lino, rolling ink over the remaining area and transferring the ink to paper using pressure. You will work with imagery gained from your choice of photographs, sketches, with a focus on a variety of subject matter. Skills will be developed through experimenting with mark making, working with positive and negative cutting, colour and “reduction block” print and understanding registration methods.

All are welcome: complete beginners and those with some knowledge will enjoy the course and find something new to take away.

Art School Creative Candle-Making new

Wednesday 29 August 2018

1 – 4pm

The session starts with a brief introduction to candles and the many different types produced today, including the pros and cons of various waxes. Participants then learn four candle-making techniques using natural soy wax and beeswax. They melt wax in individual melters, add dyes, fragrance oils and wicks to make a wax chip pillar candle, 6 floating candles, a tin container candle and several tealights. This is followed by a rolling technique to make beeswax candles.
