The Landmark Summer Art School offers you the opportunity to discover your creative potential. Enjoy a moment of uninterrupted time to develop your art skills with individual tuition and guidance.

Our summer short courses are designed for small groups of adults beginners and returners who will benefit from furthering their own art projects.

Places are limited; advance booking is strongly recommended.

Tutored by Marcia Hughes, a renowned local artist and an experienced teacher, the course teaches techniques in watercolour painting and drawing Botanical Art and Illustration. Flowers, foliage and plants are observed and step-by-step demonstrations are included with an emphasis on accurate and realistic depiction.

The workshop is designed for beginners and intermediate participants. A varied selection of fresh and dried plant material will be available on the day.

Summer Art School Portrait Drawing

Tuesday 30 July 2019 – Thursday 1 August 2019

10am – 4pm

A course which focuses on drawing the head and develops your knowledge of anatomical structure, facial proportions and features. You will also learn how to compose a portrait to express mood and reveal character. A range of linear and tonal methods will be explored and different techniques practised.

You will draw from a variety of clothed models and be taught how to depict the head from different viewpoints. Two half day sessions will be spent developing an understanding of structure, features and proportions. For these sessions you will mainly draw from skulls and simplified sculptures of the head. For the rest of the course you will be drawing from live models. There will usually be two models sitting at a time to give participants variety and enable them to get closer to the model.

Suitable for all levels, although some previous drawing experience will be an asset. All participants will work from an easel either sitting or standing.

Summer Art School Life Drawing

Tuesday 6 August 2019 – Thursday 8 August 2019

10am – 4pm

This course is open to all abilities. Previous life drawing experience is not essential although beginners should ideally have done a little general drawing previously. Returners and those with experience will be encouraged and supported in deepening their own practice and in experimenting with new approaches.

The course combines traditional observational methods with exciting and innovative exercises designed to help you see and interpret the figure in new ways. A different life model will pose each day and there will be a good balance of long and short poses. You will be working from an easel either standing or sitting.

Exploring Painting - Going into the Abstract

Tuesday 20 August 2019 – Thursday 22 August 2019

10am – 4pm

The course will explore painting in different media focusing firstly on objectivity, making drawings, taking photos and making studies. Then, using a range of suggested methods and techniques begin to pare down, change and adapt studies to create a more non-representational image.

Reference images will be available and weather permitting outdoor sketching will also be scheduled. The focus of the workshop will be on exploring a range of abstract themes and to link this with your own personal style.

We will start with slide projection looking at various exciting artists work including John Piper, Ben Nicholson and Ivon Hitchin’s Innovative methods.

Journeys: Colour Linocut (printmaking without a press)

Tuesday 27 August 2019 – Thursday 29 August 2019

10am – 4pm

Jennie ing is a local artist and an experienced tutor. She intends the course to be fun, concentrating on relief printmaking without a press, and explores the whole creative process from generating ideas and experimenting with techniques and approaches through to producing a selection of finished linocut prints.

Linocut is a fascinating and versatile technique involving the cutting away from the surface of a piece of lino, rolling ink over the remaining area and transferring the ink to paper using pressure. You will work with imagery gained from your choice of photographs, sketches, with a focus on a variety of subject matter. Skills will be developed through experimenting with mark making, working with positive and negative cutting, colour and “reduction block” print and understanding registration methods.

All are welcome: complete beginners and those with some knowledge will enjoy the course and find something new to take away.

Past papers will be supplied and marked!

  • Train: Waterloo to Teddington (approx. 35 minutes), then just over 10 minutes' signposted walk
  • Bus: R68, 281, 285 all stop outside the Centre (‘Teddington Lock’): Stop M across the road, Stop U on the same side, or Stop Y nearby on Kingston Road. Also, 33 via Waldegrave Road, Stop A or Stop B opposite (both ‘Teddington Library’). Bus spider maps.
  • Tube: District line to Richmond and then bus R68 (above)
  • Cycle: on-site parking for up to 12 bicycles
  • Car: no parking on site but free parking in surrounding streets.

How to Book…

  • By post: state the event and number of tickets required and enclose an SAE and cheque payable to ‘Landmark Arts Centre’ to our address.

Please note…

  • Booking fees: if you wish to have your tickets posted and haven’t supplied an SAE, a 50p postage fee applies.
  • Refund & Exchange Policy: no refund of tickets or class bookings will be made unless the event or class is full and we are able to re-sell your ticket/class place, in which case an admin fee of £1 will be deducted from the amount refunded.
